SAYREVILLE, NJ — A student-led neighborhood cleanup tied to Earth Day brought together volunteers and community support in the Towne Lake West section of the borough, drawing recognition from local officials.

During a recent Borough Council meeting, Councilman Alberto Rios highlighted the effort organized by Anjali Shah, a Sayreville resident and freshman at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST).
According to Rios, 23 volunteers participated in the cleanup, working together to collect litter and improve both the neighborhood and the surrounding lake area.
Rios praised the initiative, calling it a “great example of how individual initiative, especially from our youth, can bring people together and make a meaningful impact.”

Community Effort Backed by Local Support
The cleanup also received support from a local business, with Mama De’s providing empanadas and water for volunteers.
The effort was part of broader Earth Day-related activities, with a focus on encouraging local involvement and improving shared community spaces.
As highlighted during the council meeting, the event reflected a growing emphasis on grassroots participation — particularly efforts led by younger residents — to maintain and enhance neighborhoods across Sayreville.
