Lifesaving Efforts During House Fire Earn Recognition For 3 Men By Sayreville Council

SAYREVILLE, NJ — Three men were recognized by the Sayreville Borough Council on Monday night for their actions during a June house fire that officials say helped save a neighbor’s life.
Fire Safety Officer Dan McCabe and residents Guy Crowder and James English received certificates of recognition during the July 20 Borough Council meeting for their response to the June 14 fire on Scott Avenue.
Neighbors Acted Before First Responders Arrived
According to Fire Chief Masterson, Crowder and English were the first to respond after noticing smoke coming from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Beckett.
The two neighbors entered the residence to check on the occupants and located a resident inside the home.
“They went in, seen the smoke,” Masterson said. “They alerted their neighbor inside the house, woke her up, and got her out of the house and got her to safety.”
Councilman Herve Blemur, the council’s liaison to public safety, noted that the fire occurred at what was once his own home.
“That was my old home,” Blemur said.
Fire Safety Officer Conducted Secondary Search
After Crowder and English helped the resident escape, Fire Safety Officer Dan McCabe was the first emergency responder to arrive at the scene.
Chief Masterson said McCabe entered the home to conduct a secondary search for anyone else who might still have been inside.
However, he said heavy smoke and intense heat prevented McCabe from getting far into the structure.
Despite the conditions, Masterson praised the actions of all three men.
“All three of you are very brave, and I appreciate everything that you did for that day,” Masterson said. “We have no loss of life, no injuries.”
Borough Recognizes Their Service
During the ceremony, Councilman Blemur read the official proclamation issued by the mayor and Borough Council before the certificates were presented.
“The Borough of Sayreville wishes to recognize your commitment to aiding a fellow individual in need and risking it all to save a life,” the proclamation stated. “Your efforts have enriched us generously because a community possesses no greater treasure than the dedicated service of its people.”
Council President John Zebrowski thanked the three men on behalf of the borough and the Sayreville Fire Department for their actions during the incident.
