“Porches With Purpose” Brings Sayreville Families Together Through Photography

SAYREVILLE, NJ – A local photographer is turning family portraits into community impact through a new initiative that blends art, generosity, and connection.

Danny McDonnell, owner of Mac Media Productions, launched Porches With Purpose to help families “show up for one another in a real, meaningful way.”

“Photography has always been more than taking a picture and sending it off,” McDonnell said. “When I look back at my own high school photos, I see who I was becoming—the people around me, the work I put in, the moment in my life I was in. Photos are chapters.”

Building a Business Rooted in Community

McDonnell said he started Mac Media to create something lasting, not just a one-day photo service.

“I didn’t want to be the photographer who appears for a day and then disappears until the next season,” he explained. “I wanted to build something rooted in the community—something that celebrates people, families, and the culture we’re shaping together.”

Beyond photography, McDonnell volunteers in schools, serves on the Career & Technical Education Board, and partners with youth programs and local charities. He believes that trust and belonging “show up in a photograph because of the connection that happens before the camera ever comes out.”

Helping Families Help Each Other

When McDonnell first shared the Porches With Purpose idea, he didn’t have every detail finalized.

“A lot of good ideas never happen because we believe things need to be perfect before we start,” he said. “This time, I decided we start first and build alongside the community.”

Four families have already joined, helping raise $600 toward a $5,000 goal. Every dollar, McDonnell said, goes directly back into Sayreville and East Brunswick families—none toward overhead.

Where the Money Goes

The plan for the $5,000 fund includes $2,000 for local student-athletes who demonstrate “character, effort, and resilience.” Coaches will quietly nominate one athlete per program for a $100 in-person holiday shopping experience.

“This is not charity,” McDonnell said. “It’s recognition. It’s affirmation. It’s being seen.”

Another $1,000 will support smaller acts of kindness—helping with groceries, bills, or other needs that arise quietly but urgently. The remaining funds will be distributed based on community input to ensure help reaches where it’s most needed.

Kindness That Comes Full Circle”

McDonnell said families sign up not only for the portraits, but for what the project represents.

“Yes, you receive photos that capture who you are in this season of life,” he said. “But the deeper value is the example it sets. This is a way to show our children what it truly looks like to support others in our own town.”

He hopes the project reminds families that generosity can be simple—and contagious. “It’s not about being a hero or solving every problem,” McDonnell added. “It’s about choosing to show up in a real and human way.”

How to Participate

Families can book a $150 photo session that includes a 15-minute shoot, five edited digital photos, and their choice of location in Sayreville or East Brunswick—from their porch to a favorite local spot.

Sessions are scheduled for November 22–24, with 100 percent of the contribution going into the community fund.

“You walk away with photos that reflect your love and this moment in your family’s life,” McDonnell said. “The community walks away stronger because of it.”
