New E-Bike Laws Are Coming To NJ, Here’s What Sayreville Residents Should Know

SAYREVILLE, NJ – The Sayreville Police Department is reminding residents about major new e-bike regulations expected to take effect across New Jersey beginning in July 2026.
According to information shared by the department on May 18, the new statewide rules would establish requirements involving age limits, licensing, registration, insurance, and helmet use for e-bike riders.
🚲 What Will Change Under The New Rules?
Under the upcoming regulations:
- Riders must be at least 15 years old
- Riders must possess a valid driver’s license, e-bike license, or e-bike permit
- E-bikes will need to be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC)
- E-bikes must also be properly insured
- Helmets will be required for all riders, regardless of age
The department noted that licensing and registration for e-bikes are not yet available but are expected to begin in July 2026.
⚡ What Counts As An E-Bike?
According to the information shared by the department:
A low-speed e-bike is defined as a pedal bicycle where the motor assists only while pedaling and stops assisting at 20 miles per hour.
Officials also noted that throttle-capable motorized bicycles, commonly referred to as mopeds, are classified separately and may reach speeds up to 28 mph.
🛑 Police Encourage Residents To Prepare Ahead Of July 2026
The Sayreville Police Department is encouraging residents to begin preparing now ahead of the expected rollout of the new rules.
The department also urged riders to obey traffic laws, wear helmets, and ride responsibly to help improve roadway safety.
Additional updates regarding licensing and registration are expected through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC).
