Governor Murphy Recognizes VFW Post 4699 with Proclamation as Community Celebrates 80 Years of Service

SAYREVILLE, NJ — Sayreville VFW Post 4699 celebrated 80 years of service Saturday night with a gala that brought together veterans, elected officials, and community members to honor decades of dedication to the borough and its veterans.t

The event drew Borough Council President John Zebrowski, other council members, Board of Education representatives, and veterans from multiple generations.

“It was everything that we envisioned when we set out to do this. We wanted to honor the veterans of the post — some of whom have been giving back to this community for decades — in the best way possible,” said VFW Commander Dan Vardalis.

During the gala, the post received proclamations from Governor Phil Murphy, the New Jersey State Assembly, and the Borough of Sayreville, recognizing eight decades of service to veterans and residents.

Vardalis said the event was designed to create a meaningful experience for members. “We wanted to do something grand — something many of our veterans may never have experienced inside the post before,” he said.

The post has approximately 150 members, representing service eras from Vietnam through more recent conflicts. Among them is a Vietnam War veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force and has been a member for nearly 60 years, reflecting the long-standing dedication of its members.

The anniversary also marked an early milestone for Vardalis, who is in his first year as commander. He joined the U.S. Army in 1999 and was deployed to the Pentagon just days after the September 11 attacks, where he served in security operations. “That experience really showed me how important it is to take care of the people around you,” he said.

Looking ahead, Vardalis said the post’s next major focus will be Memorial Day events, with additional gatherings planned in the months ahead.

“Our goal is to honor tradition while keeping the post active and connected to veterans and the community,” he said.

Sayreville VFW Post 4699 is located on Jernee Mill Road and regularly hosts events open to veterans, their families, and residents.
