SAYREVILLE, NJ — Bernie Bailey and Dexter Thomas led the race for two Borough Council seats, while Eloy Fernandez, Alison Napolitano and Eileen Pabon were ahead for three full terms on the Board of Education in unofficial returns from Tuesday’s election.
Voters also backed a higher annual benefit for eligible emergency services volunteers. Here’s where the local races and ballot question stood in Middlesex County’s 12:10 a.m. update on November 4.
Bailey And Thomas Lead Council Race
Bailey and Thomas, both Democrats, had 8,419 and 8,301 votes, respectively. Republican incumbents John Zebrowski and Michael Colaci had 4,959 and 4,654. The county reported 52 write-in votes.
Two three-year council terms were on the ballot. Thomas was 3,342 votes ahead of Zebrowski for the second seat.
Three Full Terms And One Unexpired School Board Seat
Fernandez led the race for three full terms with 7,090 votes. Napolitano followed with 7,057 and Pabon had 6,707. Atef M. Ghaly received 3,859 votes, and there were 168 write-ins.
John Walsh was the only named candidate for a separate unexpired term. He received 7,559 votes, with 81 write-ins reported.
Voters Back Higher Volunteer Benefit
The local ballot question drew 8,201 yes votes and 2,646 no votes. About 76% of votes cast on the question were in favor.
The measure would raise the borough’s base annual contribution to its Length of Service Award Program from $750 to $1,150 for eligible emergency services volunteers, with an annual cost-of-living adjustment. Read the ballot question.
The results remain unofficial. Middlesex County says eligible mail ballots postmarked by the close of polls on Election Day can arrive up to six days afterward. The county expects certification by November 18.
