SAYREVILLE, NJ — A shark, a mayor questioned about illegal liquor sales and a police chief who apparently got into some trouble of his own.

It might sound like the plot of a movie, but these are among the unusual stories from Sayreville’s past that residents will have a chance to hear about next month.

The Sayreville Historical Society will welcome Sarah Blake of Hushed-Up History on Thursday, November 12, for a presentation titled Torn from the Headlines! Stories from Sayreville’s Past.

Blake specializes in uncovering forgotten and overlooked stories from years gone by, including some of the stranger events that once made the news.

Her research into Sayreville has uncovered tales of trouble in the borough’s clay pits, a mayor questioned about selling alcohol illegally, a police chief whose behavior raised eyebrows and, perhaps most unexpectedly, a shark.

The evening will give residents a chance to discover a side of Sayreville’s history they may never have heard about.

When And Where?

The presentation will take place Thursday, November 12, at the Sayreville Active Adult Center, 423 Main Street.

The Historical Society’s general meeting begins at 7:15 p.m., followed by Blake’s presentation at 7:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to everyone, and light refreshments will be served.

Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items for the Sayreville Food Pantry.
