Sayreville Offers Up To $265K For New Superintendent As Search Continues
Sayreville’s Board of Education is accepting applications for its next superintendent, with plans to appoint a new leader by April 2027.
SAYREVILLE, NJ — Sayreville is offering a salary of up to $265,000 as the school district continues searching for its next superintendent, with applications now being accepted to replace longtime Superintendent Dr. Richard Labbe.
The district’s job posting lists an annual salary range of $225,000 to $265,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Applications are due November 13.
The search was among the topics discussed during the October 13 Board of Education meeting, when Labbe outlined the district’s goals for the coming school year.
Labbe told board members that the job had already been advertised and that candidates were beginning to express interest.
“I know that the posting went out, and I believe I actually heard that you’re beginning to receive some applicants,” Labbe said. “That’s great news.”
The board has established a timeline for selecting the district’s next superintendent, with the goal of making an appointment several months before Labbe’s expected departure in June 2027.
When Will Sayreville Choose Its Next Superintendent?
According to the district’s goals for the 2026–27 school year, the Board of Education plans to complete three steps:
- December 1, 2026: Develop a profile outlining the qualifications and qualities the district wants in its next superintendent.
- March 1, 2027: Interview qualified candidates for the position.
- April 1, 2027: Appoint the next superintendent.
Labbe expressed confidence that the board was making progress.
“I think you’re well on the way to that,” he said while discussing the interview timeline.
The district expects its new superintendent to begin around July 1, 2027.
What Is The District Looking For?
According to the job posting, Sayreville is seeking an experienced educational leader to oversee a district serving approximately 6,400 students across nine schools.
The district has an approximately $167 million budget and employs about 640 teachers.
Applicants must hold a New Jersey School Administrator Certificate or Certificate of Eligibility and have previous experience in school leadership, such as serving as a superintendent, assistant superintendent, central office administrator or principal.
An earned doctorate is also required, while previous classroom teaching experience and bilingual skills are preferred.
The posting identifies several important areas of experience, including managing school finances, overseeing employees, improving student achievement and communicating with families and the community.
A New Chapter For Sayreville Schools
The search comes as the district prepares for its first change in superintendent in more than a decade.
Labbe has led Sayreville’s public schools for approximately 13 years, overseeing major facilities improvements, curriculum changes and the expansion of student programs.
Earlier this year, the Board of Education began exploring its options for finding his successor, including hearing presentations from organizations that assist school districts with superintendent searches.
The district is working with the New Jersey School Boards Association as part of the recruitment process.
For now, the focus is on attracting applicants and identifying the qualities board members want in the district’s next leader.
Candidates have until 5 p.m. on Friday, November 13, to apply through the New Jersey School Boards Association.
The board’s target is to name a new superintendent by April 1, giving the incoming leader time to prepare before taking over in July.
