SAYREVILLE, NJ — Rising cable bills, disappearing channels and the frustration of trying to get someone to resolve a problem.

Those were among the complaints one Sayreville resident brought to the Borough Council last week, raising a question that may be familiar to other households: What other options are available?

During the October 26 Borough Council meeting, resident Ken Scott told officials he was frustrated with Optimum’s prices and customer service.

“My bills go up $10 a month for the last couple years. Stations are being taken off. I can never get any answers when I talk to people,” Scott said.

He also described problems getting answers about his bill and asked whether the borough could help.

While officials agreed to try contacting Optimum, they also pointed to something that could give residents more choices: additional internet providers expanding into Sayreville.

More Internet Options Are Coming To Sayreville

Business Administrator Glenn Skarzynski told Scott that other companies have been bringing service to the borough.

“We’ve had two other providers come into town,” Skarzynski said.

Those providers include Xfinity and GoNetspeed, although service availability depends on where residents live.

GoNetspeed is building a fiber-optic internet network in the area, while Xfinity is expanding its presence.

Skarzynski also mentioned Starlink, a satellite internet provider, as another possible option.

For residents frustrated with their current service, the expansion could eventually mean more companies to choose from.

A $4.5 Million Internet Expansion In Parlin

One of the biggest developments involves GoNetspeed.

In August, the company announced plans to invest $4.5 million to expand its fiber-optic network in Parlin, with the goal of reaching more than 3,100 homes and businesses.

Fiber-optic internet uses cables that transmit information through light, allowing providers to offer high-speed internet connections.

GoNetspeed said it expects to begin connecting its first customers in Parlin during the winter.

That doesn’t mean everyone in Sayreville will immediately be able to sign up.

The company is building its network in stages, and availability will depend on individual addresses.

Residents interested in checking service availability can visit GoNetspeed’s Parlin website.

Borough Officials Offer To Contact Optimum

Scott also wanted to know whether Sayreville could help residents dealing with billing and service problems.

Skarzynski said he had previously spoken with Scott and would try to reach the company.

“We will make an effort to reach Optimum,” Skarzynski said.

He cautioned, however, that he couldn’t guarantee the company would respond.

Mayor Kennedy O’Brien also suggested that Scott work with the mayor’s office to pursue his concerns.

The discussion ended without any formal action against Optimum or an announced agreement with the company.

What Does This Mean For Residents?

For Sayreville households, the biggest potential change is having more choices.

But it’s important to remember that internet service and cable television aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Some providers offer internet only, while others have television packages. Prices, promotional offers and equipment fees can also vary.

Residents interested in switching should check which companies serve their addresses and compare the full monthly costs before making a decision.

As GoNetspeed continues building its network and other providers expand, more households could eventually have additional options.

Meanwhile, borough officials said they’ll try to contact Optimum about the concerns raised at the meeting.

Residents can review the October 26 Borough Council meeting information on the borough’s website.
