Man Armed With Knife Shot By Sayreville Police Officer, Prosecutor Says

SAYREVILLE, NJ — A man was hospitalized after he was shot by a Sayreville police officer during an encounter on Kendall Drive Saturday evening, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police were called to the residential street in the Parlin section of Sayreville around 6:15 p.m. after receiving a report of a man armed with a knife who was threatening people and a vehicle, authorities said.
When officers arrived, they encountered the man with the knife, according to the Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities said the man did not follow commands to drop the weapon and moved toward an officer.
An officer then fired, striking the man, according to authorities.
The man survived and was taken to a New Brunswick hospital for treatment. Authorities did not release his name, age or condition.
The Prosecutor’s Office said the man is also expected to face charges related to his alleged actions before police arrived. Details about those charges were not immediately released.
Sayreville Police alerted residents shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday that there was a significant police presence on Kendall Drive and asked people who did not live in the area to stay away.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the police shooting following consultation with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, authorities said.
