Fire Burns Through Sayreville Home After Suspected Lightning Strike

The Jensen Road house sustained extensive damage during Thursday’s storms, but the woman who lived there reportedly escaped safely.

A Sayreville home was left heavily damaged and uninhabitable after a fire that officials believe may have been caused by lightning during Thursday’s storms.

The fire broke out at a house on Jensen Road as heavy rain and lightning moved through the area, according to a report from News 12 New Jersey.

The woman who lived in the home was able to escape safely, neighbors told the station. No injuries were reported in the account.

Home Sustained Extensive Damage

The fire caused significant damage throughout the house, including broken windows and a hole in the roof.

An unsafe-structure notice was posted on the front door, while debris and belongings from inside the home could be seen across the front yard Friday morning.

People living nearby have begun helping the resident in the aftermath of the fire, according to News 12.

Lightning Reported Across Sayreville

Weather radar showed numerous lightning strikes across the Sayreville area between approximately 12:30 and 1 p.m. Thursday as the storm passed through Middlesex County.

The Jensen Road neighborhood has experienced a similar fire before.

Around the Fourth of July in 2025, another house located a few doors away caught fire after a reported lightning strike. The homeowner told News 12 that the strike hit a shed before the fire spread to the exterior of the house.

Officials had not publicly confirmed the precise cause of Thursday’s fire as of Friday.
