SAYREVILLE, NJ — A new energy project could bring renewed activity to a long-vacant industrial site along River Road, where a battery storage facility has been proposed to support the regional electric grid.
Jupiter Power is proposing the Woods Landing Battery Energy Storage System, which would be located just north of the Buchanan Park boat ramp on the site of a former coal-fired power plant.
📍 Location and Site Background
According to project documents, the facility would be built:
- On the former coal plant site, which has remained inactive for decades
- Adjacent to an existing gas plant and nearby JCP&L substations
- Along River Road, near the Raritan River waterfront
The project would redevelop a previously used energy site.
⚡ How the System Works
Battery energy storage systems are designed to store and release electricity based on demand.
According to the project presentation:
- Electricity from the grid is stored in batteries when supply is available
- The stored energy is then discharged back to the grid when demand increases
- The system connects through an electrical substation
These systems are used to help balance supply and demand across the electric grid.
🏗️ Project Design and Operations
According to project materials, the facility is designed to have limited impact once operational.
Details outlined in the project presentation include:
- No emissions during normal operations
- Minimal operational noise
- Lighting designed to reduce visual impact
- Minimal traffic after construction is complete
The developer also stated that safety is a priority and that coordination with local emergency responders would be part of the project.
🧾 Project Status
Jupiter Power previously hosted an informational session in Sayreville to introduce the project and share details with residents.
According to project information, that event was intended as an overview of the proposal. No formal public hearing was held as part of the session.
